Progress in Sports Acrobatics & Tumble Gymnastics

The majority of our gymnasts attend between 1 1/2 - 2 hours per week in the recreational gymnastic groups at Brooksbank, Burnley Road, Tuesday, Friday and the beginner groups Monday and Thursday. These groups are designed so that children develop at their own pace and have fun in a very friendly, social environment.

In these groups gymnasts will learn the basic skills of rolls, cartwheels and balances. Children at the branches will use trampettes, vaults and beams, while at the Community Centre they have access to the air track, tumble track and trampette.

Children in any of our branches / groups are invited to take part in our Summer Show or Internal Competition which we alternate each year. In December we hold a presentation evening where all the children receive a trophy to celebrate their achievements. And throughout the year gymnasts will work towards various badges where they are assessed against a set of skills.

Gymnasts who we identify as having the potential to move into the competition squad will be invited to attend a development squad where their skills will be extended and they will start a conditioning set designed to prepare them to perform more advanced moves.

The competition squad trains alongside the recreational groups but with extended hours 6- 9pm. Gymnasts are invited into the competition squad when they have achieved a number of gymnastic skills and are showing the determination and ability to perform at a higher level.

We take part in a variety of friendly competitions including an inter-regional low tariff championship with the North West. But mainly we attend the Yorkshire Region National Development Programme Competitions and have had representation at the British Finals each year since we opened. We have also taken a group of gymnasts to compete in the Swiss International competition in Geneva in 2009, 2010 & 2011. In 2012 we will be taking 7 gymnasts to an Invitational Regional Competition in Southampton over the weekend of 14th & 15th April.

Pre Grade and low tariff competition gymnasts will normally train between 3 - 5 hours per week. Gymnasts competing at Level 1 must be attending for at least 6 hours and levels 2 and above will need to be attending 9+ hours to perfect the skills required at this level.

Gymnast's cannot compete in British Gymnastics Competitions until they are 8 years old. Tumble competitions are age related but Sports Acro gymnasts can compete at any level at any age as long a they have the required skill level.
